ACNE FACE / BODY

Acne is a huge topic but to put it simply acne Acne is a disease of the pilosebaceous unit (oil gland and hair follicle) and is characterised by presence of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts, which might result in permanent scars. When the hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria this causes inflammation in the sebaceous (oil) gland.

This is a result of 4 abnormal processes. First is a higher amount of sebum production influenced by androgens (hormone) Second is excessive deposition of the protein keratin leading to comedo formation, third is colonisation of P. Acnes Bacteria and forth is the local release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the skin.

ACNE SCARRING

Abnormal production and degradation of collagen during the healing process of acne leads to various types of acne scars. In 80 to 90 percent of cases, there is a net destruction of collagen in the dermis (second layer of the skin) that results in atrophic (indented) scars. Less commonly, there is a net gain of collagen that results in hypertrophic (raised) or keloid scars.

AGE SPOTS

Age spots also known as liver spots become more apparent as we age. They are a result of an overproduction of melanin most often caused by over exposure to the sun. The loss of plumpness and elasticity in the skin causes the melanin to disperse unevenly resulting in densely pigmented spots. Age spots normally appear flat against the skin.

BLACKHEADS

Blackheads occur when pores become clogged. Each pore on your skin contains a hair follicle and sebaceous gland. This sebaceous gland is responsible for the production of sebum (oil). An excess of sebum production can result in plugging the pore at the top, and sebum will begin to build up, this oil build up will begin to catch dead skin cells and bacteria that will oxidise and turn black. A blackhead is an open comedone – where the plug of a clogged pore is open to the air on the surface of the skin.

CHERRY ANGIOMA

Cherry angiomas are made up of clusters of capillaries at the surface of the skin that can range in colour from bright red to purple. The cause of cherry angiomas has not yet been discovered.

DEHYDRATED SKIN

Dehydration in the skin is a huge topic, but to put it simply a healthy clear skin, requires about 15 to 20% water content to remain intact. Milia most commonly present around the eyes and cheeks and appear as small white bumps on the skin. This can be a result from a build up of keratin that gets trapped under the surface of the skin. It has also been linked to taking to much Vitamin C that can cause the skin to become acidic.

PIGMENTATION

Melanin is responsible for the production of pigment (colour) in the skin. Melanin is produced by meloncytes located in the basal layer (lower layer) of the Epidermis (top layer of the skin). Its production begins when there is a trigger such as UV radiation or in the case of melasma hormones.

Pigmentation can be managed using a full home care prescription using Synergie Skin products including Enlighten, Suprema C and treatments such as Cosmelan Depigmenting Peel and Synergie Skin Peels.

ROSACEA

Rosacea can present in few different ways, it can be in the form of redness and flushing or it can also present with pimples and pustules. The most common occurs as diffused redness across the cheeks and nose. This can create inflammation and can cause the nose to appear bulbs. When the skin is flushed with blood a biochemical reaction in the skin is released, this triggers expansion and growth of new blood vessels, which increases the chances of flushing.

SEBACEOUS HYPERPLASIA

The way sebaceous hyperplasia presents is the appearance of small, bumps under the skin commonly mistaken for milia. The bump can have a slight indentation in the center and a white or yellow outer edge. The case is not entirely known but its possibly linked to the sebaceous gland (oil gland) that secrets sebum (oil) and it becomes trapped inside the gland also possible changes in androgen hormones as a person ages.

SKIN TAGS

SYRINGOMA

Syringoma presents as flesh coloured or in some cases yellowish bumps, most commonly found on lower eyes and eye lids. They can be sometimes confused with milia. Syringoma is benign tumours of the eccrine glands (sweat glands).
